Tagbilaran Restaurant: Garden Cafe

At the heart of Bohol's capital city oddly stands out a Tagbilaran restaurant with an old west theme. This uniqueness got the better of my curiosity and I just had to try this unique Tagbilaran restaurant during my recent work trip to Bohol. I went with my friend Nick who is also a co-facilitator at Cebu Teambuilding Services.

Aside from it's old west theme, another unique feature of this Tagbilaran Restaurant is that it employs individuals who are hearing impaired just like what Orange Brutus does in Cebu. You are encouraged to communicate through sign language. A quick demonstration of common signs you need to use while at Garden Cafe is found in their menu. The visit to this Tagbilaran restaurant was refreshing to me as it allowed me to brush up on my sign language which I learned when I was still a kid.

According to the literature provided by this Tagbilaran restaurant, they currently employ 26 hearing impaired individuals and 11 staff who are not hearing impaired. That means most of their staff are actually hearing impaired. This Tagbilaran restaurant started with seven (7) hearing impaired employees in 1984 when it was established as a small snack bar. The provincial government of Bohol provided the lot for the endeavor of the Bohol Foundation for the Deaf and Disabled that aimed to provide employment for the hearing impaired. In it's almost 30 years in operation, It has since been transformed from a small snack center to a humble barbecue stand, a doughnut shop, a pizza parlor, and now a full-service restaurant or cafe.

This Tagbilaran restaurant is now also supported by the International Deaf Education Association or IDEA and the Bohol Deaf Academy.

What We Ordered at This Tagbilaran Restaurant

We ordered spicy chicken wings, pork sisig, pancit canton, two (2) platters of rice, hot lemonade, and two (2) cans of four seasons canned juice. Amazingly, our bill came up to only a little over PhP 700. It is truly affordable at this Tagbilaran restaurant.

Spicy Chicken Wings

The spicy chicken wings here is okay. It's spiced up with ground pepper and it is not too spicy as I expected it would be. It also comes with achara, or pickled papaya.
